Henry Rollins Visits Again

Already announced as part of The Perth International Comedy Festival, Henry Rollins’ The Long March tour will journey across Australia next April/May. The month long national odyssey is a stark contrast to the four intimate appearances he made in Sydney and Melbourne earlier this year, announced on an email, and which sold out in minutes.
Rollins‘ curiosity and hunger for experienced based knowledge, teamed with his willingness to travel, his no-holds-barred delivery of his opinions and observations, and wicked sense of humour make him one of the most inspiring and interesting commentators / entertainers of a generation.
So far in 2011 he has toured the world delivering his provocative, humour riddled spoken word show; joined alternative kings Dinosaur Jr on the road interviewing them live on stage after each show; released Occupants, a collection essays and his own photos taken in Bangladesh, Burma, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Northern Ireland, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and elsewhere over the last few years; rolled out his weekly radio show on KCRW (most likely the only radio show in the world where you will hear Kraftwerk, Frank Sinatra, The Buzzcocks and some exotic local South African artist in the one playlist); travelled to Sudan as an ambassador for Drop In The Bucket; filmed a TV series about folk who own and consume exotic creatures called Animal Underworld for National Geographic; performed at Leeds, Reading and Edinburgh Festivals and spent a week in Haiti talking with locals who are still struggling to recover their lives from the earth quake that struck two years ago.

Henry Rollins Tours and Talks

Having reached the half-century mark , Henry Rollins, gears up for a new talking tour this March hitting intimate venues in Australia and around the world to share stories from, and reflections on, his first 50 years and the chaos that has surrounded him.
“On February 13th of 2011, I will turn fifty years of age. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate this once-in-a-lifetime occasion than by doing some shows,” Rollins explains. “Hopefully, I will be able to evince some imperfect pearls of ancient wisdom to the audience, having made it this far.”
It’s not so much the mere wisdom of age, but the wisdom of experience that audiences are likely to encounter when Rollins takes the stage – whether he’s relaying rock n’ roll anecdotes, or tackling more serious topics with his distinctive synthesis of anger, amusement, and global perspective. A relentless traveler on an unyielding quest for firsthand knowledge, Rollins most recent excursion took him across the Pacific to China, North Korea, Mongolia, Nepal, Tibet, Bhutan and Vietnam.
“All of these destinations gave me a lot to think about, write about and talk about. Wondering if I knew more about North Korea than my guide in Pyongyang was a strange thing to walk around with all day. To see the lasting effects of Tetrachlorodibenzodioxin (otherwise known as Agent Orange) showing up in children generations later in Hanoi was an eye opener, to say the least,” says Rollins. “To leave all that and come back to America with all its unique idiosyncrasies always makes me want to know more. These days, as far as things to pay attention to, be frustrated about and seek to change, a conscientious person is fairly spoiled for choice. You know me, I’ll always tell you what I think.”
With residencies in New York and Los Angeles behind him, Henry Rollins arrives in Australia to perform ’50′ at the Gershwin Room in St.Kilda and at the Gaelic Theatre in Surry Hills. Each venue will be fully seated with capacities limited to just 200 tickets per night making these the most exclusive & intimate shows of Henry’s 21 year relationship with Australia.
Frighteningly I still remember Rollins first Australia tour. I recall being dumbstruck by the intensity of his performance in front of the band that bore his name. twenty one years may have passed and the style of performance may be different, but Rollins remains an essential element of the landscape.
Tickets for all shows are to go on-sale Monday 28th February and are expected to sell out immediately.

Monday March 7th: Melbourne, Gershwin Room (Esplanade Hotel

Henry Rollins Chalks Up More Points

Perennial but continuously welcome Australian tourist Henry Rollins comes back to Australia in 2010 to present his Frequent Flyer tour.
When Rollins talks about travelling the world, he’s not referring to plush resorts and genteel European cities. His most recent travels include stops in Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Brunei, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, China, and Senegal. These global experiences – like past excursions to such vacation hotspots as Pakistan, Myanmar, and Siberia – not only supply humorous anecdotes for Rollin’s talking shows, but they inform his worldview. As the Shepherd Fairey tour poster bills it, ‘Knowledge without mileage equals bullsh*t.’
‘Since I was last on tour, I have been working in television and radio, traveling all over the world,’ says Rollins. ‘And like everyone else, dealing with the changes America – and the world – is going through. I thought America would become a more peaceful place in 2009. I had no idea the country had so many lunatics. There’s a lot to remark upon, of course. There always is.’

The Coachella Festival is one of the great music festivals of the world. Held in Indio, California which is about 150 miles out of Los Angeles Coachella has always set the standard when it comes to combining hot new acts with some well selected old timers.
The 2009 instalment is no exception. Its held over three days April 17-19.
Some of the older acts in this years line-up include Leonard Cohen, Paul McCartney, Morrissey, Henry Rollins, Bob Mould, Perry Farrell, The Cure, X, Booker T and Michael Franti & Spearhead. They are joined by a host of younger acts including a couple that this website really likes The Hold Steady and The Gaslight Anthem.
