Hope Sandoval To Tour – Really!

April 20, 2010 by Andrew Watt

Hope Sandoval isn’t someone who I really expected to announce as an Australian tourist but it just goes to show that winter brings some dark and thrilling surprises. Hope Sandoval was the voice of Mazzy Starr and since then has been somewhat elusive and reclusive, releasing only two solo albums in eight years. This very website reviewed her latest album Through The Devil Softly and its every bit... Read the full story

Hard Luck Woman – Kiss

One of the most endearing songs that Kiss ever released was this acoustic guitar based ballad that featured lead vocals from drummer Peter Criss. It remains one of writer  Paul Stanley’s masterstrokes in the evolution of the band. It was a formulaic song in the way in was structured and it was highly reminiscent of a Faces song like Maggie May or You Wear It Well more so than most of the rock music... Read the full story

April 18, 2010 by Andrew Watt

Jewel hasn’t always hit the mark and between a couple of really great phases in her career she’s had a couple of kinda dodgy ones. But I’m usually prepared to give her new stuff a chance and thus I’ll listen to the forthcoming album. The lady herself emailed her fan base to announce the news. “My new album “Sweet And Wild” will be in stores on June 8, 2010. I’m so excited... Read the full story

Melissa Auf der Maur Goes Out of Our Minds

Most indie rock tragics from the nineties would probably admit to having a teenzy weenzy indie rock type crush on Melissa Auf der Maur. As the slightly elusive bass player in Hole she was kinda the anti Coutrtney, a little aloof and mysterious whereas poor Courtney was very upfront and in your face. But enough of her past. Melissa Auf der Maur (a.k.a. MAdM) has since gone solo and has just released... Read the full story

It’s been seven years since Natalie Merchant released an album of new material but she’s certainly made her return an interesting one. Leave Your Sleep is Natalie Merchant’s first studio album since 2003’s The House Carpenter’s Daughter. This release is the culmination of seven years’ research and collaboration and is, in Merchant’s words, “the most elaborate project I have ever... Read the full story

My First Interview Ends In…..

April 18, 2010 by Andrew Watt

My first ever interview ended up with me sharing the stage with one of rock’s most iconic characters. Well, kind of sharing the stage. My first ever interview wasn’t even with a musician. When The Cure (not the band, but a cool name for a student political ticket) swept to power in the Monash University student elections I found myself part of a loose alliance of interests left running the student... Read the full story
