The Pixies – Festival Hall

The Pixies shows were hotly anticipated and they were also bloody hot. It was like being transported back to a sweaty, inner-city public on a hot summers nights – somewhere a good proportion of this crowd had grown up. The show was like a reunion; many happy, familiar, slightly aged faces re-living the days of their altern-rock youth. I had a great time but my mate Ruttsy (Andrew Rutter) had... Read the full story

A while ago on his website James Reyne was asking fans to guess what his next project would be. Apparently he got all kinds of interesting suggestions, some ideas that he hadn’t ever thought of himself. But I’m not sure if anyone actually guessed correctly. Well now the mystery project has been revealed. Reyne’s new album James Reyne TCB is a collection of Elvis Presley covers. Reyne has announced... Read the full story

Devil Gate Drive – Suzi Quatro

The first album that I bought with my own money was Slade’s Old New Borrowed and Blue. If my memory serves me right the second might have been a Suzi Quatro album. Whether that’s true or not there’s no doubting that Devil Gate Drive was one of the earliest rock songs that had a profound impact on young Andrew. Listening to it now it holds up pretty well. “Hey, ya’ll wanna go down to Devil... Read the full story

Johnny Ray’s Downtown – Perry Keyes (Laughing Outlaw)

On face value  it appears that there’s a battle royal going on for Perry Keyes musical soul and it’s a battle that hopefully ends in a countout and honourable moral victory for all combatants. Featuring in this hypothetical match to the death are the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Paul Kelly, Willie de Ville, Warren Zevon, Elvis Costello, Tom Petty, Don Walker and Tom Waits, with well timed outside... Read the full story

Don Walker will be playing some shows in May around Australia and you would be unwise not to attend. I haven’t been able to find any information about the shows other than Don Walker will be performing them and he will receive support from a chap named Roy Payne on most of them. But really the fact that Don Walker is performing the shows gives me confidence in my assertion that it would be unwise... Read the full story

Runaway Train – Soul Asylum

March 14, 2010 by Andrew Watt

Runaway Train was the song that took Soul Asylum from being a Minneapolis indie band with a devoted following to an MTV staple with a national hit – and almost killed them in the process. Superficially Runaway Train is an acoustic guitar based rock ballad that has as much in common with Kiss’s Hard Luck Woman or The Faces Maggie May as it does with the previous output from the former punk rock... Read the full story

No Guts, No Glory – Airbourne (EMI)

Has anyone mentioned Airbourne sound a bit like AC/DC? Actually every review that’s ever been written of the band since their first shows in the Warrnambool area to their recent years touring America and Europe as headliners and on big heavy rock bills has mentioned their affinity with the greatest of all Oz rockers. It’s more than an elephant in the room, it’s steaming herd of rampaging pachyderms. But... Read the full story

Purity Of Essence – Hoodoo Gurus (Sony)

March 14, 2010 by Andrew Watt

Hoodoo Gurus probably had more chance of making a sustained “comeback” than any band of their era, simply because they were never a band “of their era”. Even when they were dominating 80’s and 90’s rock radio in Australia they were always flavoured with the essence of retro and thus when they release an album in 2010 they don’t need to worry about sounding dated. They do sound dated but... Read the full story
